Consultant – Education and Violent Extremism

The Consultant will aid Hedayah in research and report writing with respect to a project on education and violent extremism in the context of Iraq.

Key Responsibilities

The Consultant will be responsible for:

  • Conducting desk research for background on violent extremism and trends in Iraq;

  • Identifying culturally-relevant codes with QDA software to identify key themes in primary source texts;

  • Extracting and analyzing relevant themes from the texts and generating recommendations;

  • Liaising with the research team to interpret research findings, and advising on the meaning of those findings in the Iraqi context;

  • Attending and participating in a week-long workshop to code and analyze primary source texts in Abu Dhabi (projected for June 2020);

  • Writing sections of the final deliverables on the research findings, including at least one short and one long report.

Qualifications and Experience

  • M.A. or Ph.D. in International Relations, Political Science, Terrorism Studies, or a related field;

  • At least 5 years of experience in research related to education or counter-terrorism in Iraq.

Key Skills

  • Fluency (written and spoken) in English and in Arabic —Iraqi dialects are an advantage;

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research in complex environments, including Iraq;

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in Microsoft Office Suite (other technical abilities an advantage);

  • Demonstrated analytical skills;

  • Demonstrated ability to work in an international, multi-cultural and professional environment as a crucial member of a team;

  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to achieve results in a timely manner;

  • Self-motivated, flexible, creative, and ability to work independently to find solutions;

  • Willingness and availability to travel to Abu Dhabi throughout the project.


  • Deliverable based Contract.

  • The recruit shall start as soon as possible. The consultant will be home-based, with planned travel to Abu Dhabi (pending COVID-19 restrictions).

  • The contract shall initially be for 4 months, potentially renewable upon mutual agreement and available funding.
